AFA– Memphis began in a Sunday School classroom during a weekday morning prayer meeting in what was at that time the home of Oakhaven Baptist Church. Several godly men from several Christian denominations were concerned about the flow of pornographic material into Memphis area homes via cable television. Other related issues were threatening the healthy emotional and social development of our children. It was time to do something about the flood of dangerous, sexually charged and immoral content that was spewing harm into the minds of children and adults. We banded together under the original name of “Coalition for Decency.” Bill Fox, a local layman, was our executive leader in the early days. After several months of progress, we aligned with the National Federation for Decency, headed by Rev. Don Wildmon. Rev. John Bomar, a longtime local pastor, then took the helm and led our organization until January 2004. We held packed rallies in the Cook Convention Center and Mid South Coliseum, spoke in numerous area churches and civic clubs, conducted picketing operations against stores that were selling smut in ways children could easily view, and collected approximately 40,000 cablevision subscription cancellation notices in an effort to encourage Memphis Cablevision to remove the Playboy Channel from the regular lineup. We placed over 1,500 picketers on the street one morning in front of the Cablevision offices to gain their attention. Later, in what was called an unrelated move, the Playboy Channel was quietly removed. We have worked behind the scenes with law enforcement and various elected officials to help to reduce the damage that rampant sexual promiscuity and the sex trades do to people, families, and property values. We have helped to support and cooperate with other, like-minded organizations over the years. Several years ago, the NFD changed its name to American Family Association, and we as a local chapter did likewise. In 2005, the national headquarters stopped supporting local chapters, so we now function as an autonomous unit with a similar but different mission statement from that of the AFA national headquarters in Tupelo, MS. Trent Hall (one of the original Board members) was unanimously elected by the Board to become President, effective in January 2004. Since that time, we have been working largely behind the scenes to develop ways to help prevent moral failures, in addition to the more public ways of protesting and acting against assaults on the family, against marriage, and against children. Life to Life is an outgrowth of that ministry thrust. You may want to be a part of the effort through either AFAM or Life to Life.
